Pennsylvanians Lose Record Gambling Sum In Single Month

Published on June 18, 2026

Pennsylvania gambling operators took a record $625.5 million from people in May, according to new figures from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

That total includes revenue from brick-and-mortar casinos, online casino gambling, sports betting, fantasy contests, and video gaming terminals (VGTs). It was up 3.9% from May 2025 and topped the previous monthly record of $623.1 million set in January 2025.

The figure doesn’t include revenue from lottery products.

The state, a partner in predatory gambling, collected nearly $270 million in gambling tax revenue during the month.

Addiction Harm Mounts

For millions of Pennsylvanians impacted by problem gambling, the widespread harm continues to reach unprecedented levels.

Online casino gambling was one of the biggest drivers of the May total. Internet casino games generated $254.8 million in revenue, up 9.4% from the same month last year. Online slots, which feature the extraordinarily harmful near-miss effect, alone generated $202.5 million, a 14.3% increase from May 2025.

Retail slot machines remained the largest single category, generating $232.1 million in May, up 3.2% from the prior year. Retail table games produced $81.2 million, up 1.7%.

Sports betting revenue moved in the opposite direction. Sportsbooks generated $52.6 million in taxable revenue in May, down 11.4% from May 2025. Total sports betting handle, the amount wagered, was $595.6 million, down 9.1% year over year.

Bottom Line

Pennsylvania’s gambling market continues to produce enormous monthly losses for consumers. Online gambling is the economic driver of the Keystone State gambling sector.

The record revenue also comes as Pennsylvania continues to debate the future of so-called skill games and other gambling-adjacent products.

Tax revenue from gambling may fund public programs, but it does not offset the financial, emotional, and family harm that can come from gambling addiction.

A record month for gambling revenue means devastating human costs.
